Baja California, Mexico: From La Paz Streets to a Desert Island Dream

Some trips are about checking boxes. Others are about contrast—city and sea, comfort and wildness, tacos and tide lines. This Baja California adventure delivered all of that, beginning in the laid-back capital of Baja Sur and ending with an overnight escape on a remote island in the Sea of Cortez.

Here’s how it unfolded.

La Paz: Easygoing, Sun-Washed, and Full of Flavor

Our journey began in La Paz, a coastal city that feels refreshingly real. Life moves slowly here. Evenings are for strolling the Malecón, mornings for coffee and sea breezes, and every meal somehow involves seafood.

Staying at Hotel Catedral

We stayed at Hotel Catedral, a boutique hotel tucked into the historic center and just steps from the waterfront. It’s the kind of place that gets the balance right—comfortable without feeling overdone, stylish without trying too hard.

Rooms are quiet and thoughtfully designed, perfect for resetting between adventures. After long days in the sun, coming back to crisp linens, air conditioning, and a calm, shaded courtyard felt like luxury. The location made everything easy: sunset walks, casual dinners, early-morning departures.

La Paz itself deserves time. Between swims at nearby beaches like Balandra, boat trips, and lingering meals, it’s the kind of place that gently convinces you to stay longer than planned.

Leaving the City Behind: Into the Sea of Cortez

After a few days on land, we traded pavement for water and boarded a boat bound for Isla Espíritu Santo, a protected island paradise just offshore. The water shifted from deep blue to impossible turquoise as we approached—clear enough to see fish from the boat.

Our destination: Camp Cecil, run by Todos Santos Eco Adventures.

Camp Cecil: Wild, Remote, and Wonderfully Comfortable

Camp Cecil sits right on the beach, backed by desert hills and facing calm, crystalline water. It feels far from everything—but intentionally so.

This isn’t roughing it. The camp offers spacious canvas tents with real beds, cozy linens, and enough comfort to fully relax while still feeling immersed in nature. There’s no Wi-Fi, no distractions—just wind, water, and stars.

Meals were a highlight. Fresh, thoughtfully prepared food appeared like magic, shared communally with fellow travelers. Evenings unfolded slowly: sunset drinks, stories under the stars, and the soft sound of waves nearby.

Days Shaped by Nature

Life at Camp Cecil follows the rhythm of the island.

Mornings began with coffee and sea light filtering into the tents. Days were spent kayaking along the coastline, snorkeling in clear coves, swimming with curious sea lions, and wandering beaches that felt completely untouched. The Sea of Cortez lives up to its reputation—rich, vibrant, and endlessly alive.

There was also plenty of time to do nothing at all. Sitting in the shade. Watching pelicans skim the water and dive for fish. Letting the stillness settle in.

At night, the sky took over. With no light pollution, stars stretched from horizon to horizon, bright enough to feel almost unreal.

Why This Trip Worked So Well

The magic of this Baja experience was in the pairing.

La Paz gave us culture, comfort, and connection—great food, walkable streets, and an easy rhythm. Camp Cecil offered the opposite in the best way: isolation, simplicity, and deep immersion in nature.

Together, they created a trip that felt balanced and complete.
